Our group meets at Heathrow Airport by Noon to travel to the small town of Glastonbury to tour and attend Glastonbury Symposium for the next 4 days.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/carieliin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/slide0116_image037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/carieliin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/slide0116_image037.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Glastonbury Tor\" width=\"349\" height=\"272\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mysterious Glastonbury is the supposed home of the mysterious isle of Avalon, the place where King Arthur\u2019s sword was forged, according to legend. It was here, after the Battle of Camlann, that a mortally wounded King Arthur died.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll pull off the road for an iconic photo from the distance of the famous <strong>Glastonbury Tor which<\/strong> is a hill near Glastonbury in the English county of Somerset, with ruins of a church, St Michael&#8217;s Tower sitting on it. It is legend that the Divine Mother, the Great Magdalene came to Glastonbury with her brother Joseph of Arimithea after Christ&#8217;s death to start the CHURCH. The 14th-century monks claimed that the Old Church was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the year AD 63. According to the Bible, Joseph was the man who gave Jesus his tomb and he was believed to be Christ\u2019s great uncle.<\/p>\n<p>Around 1130, William of Malmesbury described Glastonbury\u2019s ancient \u2018brushwood\u2019 church. He suggested that missionaries founded it in AD 166, but he thought it could even date back to the time of Christ\u2019s apostles.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cboxElement\" href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glastonburyabbeyarchaeology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/1_1_2_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"colorbox-178 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glastonburyabbeyarchaeology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2017\/12\/1_1_2_2-350x219.jpg\" alt=\"Reconstruction of the Old Church by Francis Bligh Bond taken from original drawing in Glastonbury Abbey Collection. (\u00a9 Glastonbury Abbey Collection)\"><\/a>According to William, \u201cThe church at Glastonbury\u2026 is the oldest of all those that I know of in England\u2026 In it are preserved the bodily remains of many saints, and there is no part of the church that is without the ashes of the blessed. The stone-paved floor, the sides of the altar, the very altar itself, above and within, are filled with relics close-packed. Deservedly indeed is the repository of so many saints said to be a heavenly shrine on earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As William\u2019s history of Glastonbury was re-copied, people made new additions.<\/p>\n<p>In 1184 a fire destroyed the Old Church. Any final traces were lost when the crypt was dug into the Lady Chapel around 1500, so the form and appearance of the Old Church can only be conjectured.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The abbey\u2019s first archaeologist, Frederick Bligh Bond, suggested that it may have resembled an Iron Age round house.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reconstruction of the Old Church by Francis Bligh Bond taken from original drawing in Glastonbury Abbey Collection. The Chalice Well, also known as the Red Spring due to the iron content, is a well situated near the summit of <strong>Chalice Hill, a small hill next to Glastonbury Tor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3750 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carieliin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Au-Chalice-Wells-Garden-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carieliin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Au-Chalice-Wells-Garden-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/carieliin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Au-Chalice-Wells-Garden.jpg 442w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/> According to legend, the chalice well waters are believed to possess healing qualities and represents the holy chalice or holy grail which is symbolic of the divine soul or the divine feminine aspect of the Divine Mother who guards and\/or opens the passageway to heaven.&nbsp; Thus, She teaches the path to heaven\/the divine to Her devotees. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest&nbsp;megalithic&nbsp;stone circle in the world. Its original purpose is unknown, although archaeologists believe that it was most likely used for some form of ritual or ceremony. Looking toward the sunrise, the entrance in the northeast points over a big pillar, now leaning at an angle, called the Heel Stone. Looking the other way, it points to the midwinter sunset.
